A phrase of devastating elegance. Vogel casts Bergmann's collations as a hereditas — an 'inheritance' in the Roman legal sense — and his own edition as a monumentum erected from that legacy. The language deliberately echoes Roman funerary inscriptions and testamentary formulae. There is a double meaning: Bergmann's scholarly labor is both the material from which the edition is built and the inheritance that passes from one generation of scholars to the next. The phrase 'sacra esto' ('let it be sacred') is the imperative of Roman religious dedication — Vogel consecrates his edition as one would consecrate a temple or a tomb.
