PRAEFATIO.

super quod inductum habet corium colore nigro infectum, in bibliothecae catalogo a Ioh. Saccelione Graece conscripto recensetur sub nota numerali N = 50. Exaratus est autem exceptis tribus foliis posterius scriptis (1. 309. 310) litteris minusculis exeuntis saeculi X vel ineuntis XI*), itaque ceteros omnes quorum quidem habemus notitiam Diodori codices aetate longe superat. Comprehendit sex libros XI—XVI, finiturque horum postremus folio 309 verso. Litterae clarae atque compositae proxime accedunt ad similitudinem earum, quae reperiuntur in codicibus Eusebii historiae ecclesiasticae Mazarinaeo et Vaticano. Ad regendam manum scribentis per membranam acuto quodam instrumento ductae sunt lineae, vacuo tamen relicto margine duos vel tres digitos lato, habentque singulae paginae versus 32 continuos. over which is stretched leather dyed black, and it is listed in the library catalogue written in Greek by Joh. Saccelion under the numeral N = 50. It is written, except for three folios written later (1, 309, 310), in minuscule letters of the end of the 10th or the beginning of the 11th century*); thus it far surpasses in age all other manuscripts of Diodorus of which we indeed have knowledge. It comprises six books XI—XVI, and the last of these ends on folio 309 verso. The clear and composed letters closely approach the likeness of those which are found in the Mazarinaeus and Vaticanus manuscripts of Eusebius' ecclesiastical history. To guide the hand of the writer, lines were drawn across the parchment with some sharp instrument, yet leaving a margin two or three fingers wide empty, and each page has 32 continuous lines. Folios 1 and 309, of which the former on each page contains 26 lines, the latter on each 28, were written in the 15th century in a hand that is recognized from folio 310 recto as that of the monk Andrew Gregorius of Chios. For there, written in the same hand but in somewhat smaller letters, are read the prayer formula taught by Christ: πάτερ ἡμῶν etc. and an ecclesiastical hymn: θεὸς ἀγαθὸς ἀεὶ καὶ ἔστι καὶ ἔσται etc. with a memorable subscription: θεοῦ συναιρομένου πᾶσαν τήνδε βίβλον περιελθὼν ὧδ᾿ ἔληξα ὥρᾳ τῇδε νυκτέρᾳ ᾳη νοεμβρίου η̅ ἰνδικτιῶνος ιε΄ τῆς τοῦ λόγου οἰκονομίας ἔτει ͵α̅υ̅ξ̅ς̅ (i.e. 1466) ἐν νάξῳ γρηγόριος μονότροπος τάχαγε**) θύτης
