BOOK XIV. XXIX

Ch. 5. The Thirty most cruelly slaughter Theramenes, who opposed them, and other citizens distinguished by wealth and influence. 6. The Lacedaemonians support the outrages of the tyrants and themselves persecute the exiles. The Argives and Thebans protect the fugitives. 7. In Sicily, Dionysius, having fortified the city and strengthened his tyranny in many ways, leads the Syracusans against the Sicels, who had revolted from him. But they turn their arms against the tyrant. 8. Dionysius, shut up in Syracuse, despairs of maintaining his rule. Having obtained permission to leave, he secretly solicits the aid of the Campanians. 9. By the arrival of the Campanians, Dionysius recovers both his freedom and his tyranny. Part of the rebels return to favor, part head for the town of Aetna, threatening a new war. The Campanians, while returning with many gifts, by treachery occupy Entella. 10. The Lacedaemonians, having attained dominion by land and sea, after establishing harmosts everywhere through Lysander and imposing tributes, send Aristus to Syracuse to confirm the tyranny of Dionysius. Arms were taken away from all the Syracusans. 11. Alcibiades is slain by Pharnabazus through treachery. Democritus the philosopher dies. The Romans wage war with the Volsci. Ol. 94, 2 : 403 BC 12. The Byzantines, afflicted by seditions and by war brought upon them by the Thracians, seek a commander from the Lacedaemonians. Clearchus is sent, who oppresses the Byzantines with dreadful tyranny. Constrained by force by the Lacedaemonians, he flees to Cyrus in Asia, who places him in command of his forces. 13. Among the Lacedaemonians, Lysander attempts to deprive the Heraclidae of the kingship. But oracles, vainly solicited with bribes, oppose him. Accused of bribery, he is acquitted, only being convicted after his death. 14. In Sicily, Dionysius, having pacified the city of Syracuse, prepares to subdue the neighboring cities. He captures Aetna. Having attacked the Leontines in vain, he then moves his camp against the Sicels. Aimnestus, tyrant of Enna, when he saw himself eluded by him, was seized and led to punishment.
