DE CODICIBUS LIBRORUM XI—XII.
ἐθέλοντες P 16, 42, 9] ante consonantem, et ἐθελοντήν ante vocalem; cf. vol. I p. LI. Legendum enim est cum P πλήθη. Malim etiam XII 10, 5 cum P scribere ἀμετρεὶ [vulg. ἀμετρή, edit. ἀμετρί]. Inschr. 1888 p. 89) littera ν paragogica hoc modo adhibita est: ante vocales in media oratione 38 locis adest, 1 abest in pausa 29 " " 2 " " ante consonantes in media oratione 82 locis adest, 12 abest in pausa 22 " " nusquam abest. Hunc usum effusum litterae ν non solum posterioribus codicibus tribuendum esse, sed ipsi archetypo fuisse proprium, optime illustratur vitio omnibus libris communi XII 33, 1 ἐπ᾿ ἄρχοντος δ᾿ Ἀθήνησι Ναυσιμάχου pro nomine Λυσιμάχου: scriptum erat in archetypo ΑΘΗΝΗCΙΝΑΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ. — Huic consuetudini repugnat vocabulum εἴκοσι, in quo codex P semper, ceteri plerumque litteram ν etiam ante vocales omiserunt. 3*

ἐθέλοντες P 16, 42, 9] before a consonant, and ἐθελοντήν before a vowel; cf. vol. I p. LI. — Similarly, finally, ει and η are confused, particularly in the forms ἐλείφθην and ἐλήφθην. Although this error is generally clear enough, it has hitherto lain hidden at XII 61, 6 βελῶν τε πλήθει [πλῆθος ed.] καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν χρησίμων πολλὴν ἔχοντες ἀφθονίαν. For with P we must read πλήθη. I would also prefer at XII 10, 5 to write with P ἀμετρεὶ [vulg. ἀμετρή, ed. ἀμετρί]. Finally, let it be permitted to add a very few things concerning ν, the so-called ἐφελκυστικόν. This, in the manuscripts, especially in codex P, is very often placed even before consonants; and that this is not foreign to Diodorus' age we are taught by Greek inscriptions made within the years 100—30 BC, in which (cf. Leipziger Studien vol. IV and Meisterhans, Grammatik der att. Inschr. 1888 p. 89) the paragogic letter ν is used in this way: before vowels in the middle of a sentence, present in 38 places, absent in 1 at a pause, present in 29 places, absent in 2 before consonants in the middle of a sentence, present in 82 places, absent in 12 at a pause, present in 22 places, absent nowhere. That this profuse use of the letter ν is to be attributed not only to later manuscripts, but was proper to the archetype itself, is excellently illustrated by an error common to all books at XII 33, 1 ἐπ᾿ ἄρχοντος δ᾿ Ἀθήνησι Ναυσιμάχου for the name Λυσιμάχου: there was written in the archetype ΑΘΗΝΗCΙΝΑΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ. — This practice is opposed by the word εἴκοσι, in which codex P always, and the others generally, omitted the ν even before vowels. 3*

ΑΘΗΝΗCΙΝΑΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ — archetype error proving ν ἐφελκυστικόν
A brilliant deduction: at XII.33.1, all manuscripts read Ναυσιμάχου ('of Nausimachus') instead of the correct archon name Λυσιμάχου ('of Lysimachus'). The error arose because in the archetype, written in continuous uncial without word breaks, the text read ΑΘΗΝΗCΙΝΑΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ — where the ν of Ἀθήνησιν (with paragogic nu before a consonant) was absorbed into the following name: ΑΘΗΝΗCΙΝ + ΛΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ was misread as ΑΘΗΝΗCΙ + ΝΑΥCΙΜΑΧΟΥ. This single error simultaneously proves (1) the archetype was in continuous uncial script, (2) it used paragogic nu before consonants, and (3) it lacked word division. A masterpiece of palaeographic deduction.
