Epaminondas urges the Thebans to take up maritime supremacy. 79. The Thebans build ships. Epaminondas compels Laches, commander of the Athenian fleet, to yield. The Thebans inflict the most severe punishments on the Orchomenians, who had stirred up sedition along with some exiles. 80. Pelopidas brings aid to the Thessalians, oppressed by war from Alexander of Pherae, undeterred by the defection of his own soldiers. He is victorious, but is himself killed. Alexander is compelled to restore everything.
